Stopping the Action
This is how I'm doing with my senior portfolio, which will include 10 images in the final portfolio.
I am going to post my artist statement first, then include some of the stuff I have been working on.
Artist Statement:
Stopping the action
Sports have always been a big part of my life. I have played softball, soccer, and been on gymnastics and track and field teams. It seems only fitting that my childhood was filled with sports, that my future be surrounded by sports.
Sporting events are so fast-pace one might not see every bit of action during one event. Little bits of action aren't seen by the viewer, nor part of the action, but merely the pre or post action rituals. I will show some aspects of a given game which a viewer will not likely see or may past by too fast one may miss it with the blink of an eye. I will stop actions, such as a soccer player head-butting a ball during a game and go behind the scenes to show what may not be visible. In some cases it won't be part of the actual action, but without it the outcome wouldn't be the same. For example when a gymnasts chalks up before attempting a bar performance or tapping wrists or ankles to avoid future injuries or already ailing wounds during a meet. These are not part of the action of the sporting event, but essential to a gymnasts safely during the meet.
I intend to stop the action during the intense moments of fast-paced sporting events so the viewer can see details, which cannot be seen while watching a game or meet. Facial expressions and emotions will be shown, but not always prominent in each photo, since not every photo will include a face, but just a piece of the action.
In some cases multiple photos will be placed together to give the viewer different aspects of the sporting event will out having to move to another position. Placing two or more photos together will help the viewer to see which sports are being displayed since some photos will only be a part of the action.
